Have I become an old boring geek?

Last night I went to the monthly 2600 meeting in Brisbane. We played a few rounds on Quake Arena and later on talked about different geek and hacker topics. I had fun, but not as much fun as I expected.

I’ve always had an interesting in hacking and trying to make gadgets and such do more than it’s expected to do. Yesterday I drifted away when they were talking about wifi sniffing and cracking. Well, I listened with one ear, but I didn’t feel as interested as I might have been 10+ years ago.

I’m not sure if I’m losing interest, or if my focus is shifting to something that everyone can benefit from.
I’ve always been interested in telecommunication, so exploiting wifi is interesting, but not something I would go around doing everyday. My focus has always been more focused on transportation and spreading information securely. Be it words or raw data.
I think it’s safe to say that I find social engineering and media hacking more interesting and useful in the long run. Don’t get me wrong, keeping focus on how to better improve wireless security is important; but can that be used to change the world?

Also I don’t tinker as much as I used to. I just browse around the web, reading news and randomly posting an article now and then.

Honestly I don’t know where I’m heading with this article, but I’ll try to sum it up in the next paragraph.

I think I’ve just become too tired of always tinkering with stuff without no purpose. I spent maybe an hour to fix the sound issue in Fedora 11, thanks to a great howto; but that had an actual meaning and end result. I do have a few ideas on how to change this, but I’ll air those ideas later or never.

Live long and prosper.

To blog or to idle, that is the question.

While I’ve been running around this morning, trying to get things done so we have moderate clean apartment when 1azylizzie comes home from the RSPCA, I’ve been playing around with an article I’ve wanted to write for some time now.

What annoys me now is that I really feel I’m back at work again. Weekends are too short and I’m too tired to do anything productive. Just trying to do lazy and relaxing activities. I do find writing relaxing, or I wouldn’t be writing this, but when I want to write an article that is less personal and more informative I want to do a really good job. At the moment I don’t feel I have the mental energy to do it, because I need to recharge my batteries more as I will be on the phones the next whole week.

I will have another cuppa and think about it though.

Goodbye Fedora, hello Ubuntu?

After playing around with Ubuntu, Kubuntu (I still hate KDE with a passion) and Xubuntu last night in VirtualBox I might install either Ubuntu or #! CrunchBang on my 1000H.

After Fedora isn’t working as good as it used to do, and that annoying packet incident yesterday, I feel it’s time I try something new now.

#!

Yesterday I came across #! CrunchBang Linux, as I were looking for distros that uses OpenBox as a default VM.

I installed it on my Eee PC 701 without any issues at all. It worked out-of-the-box and the boot time is amazing. So far I really enjoy using #!, but there is just one small thing that annoys me a little bet (of course). It’s based on Ubuntu, a distro I’m not too fond, but I’m still not sure why.

In other words, #! is just Ubuntu themed with OpenBox. Which I could more or less do myself using Fedora. I’m considering doing it, as I’m more familiar with Fedora than Ubuntu.

I might even try XFCE.

If you want a non-bloated version of Ubuntu that boots really fast, try #!.

Is this my computer?

After trying out different Linux flavours and ending up with Fedora, again, I don’t feel at home with this install. I don’t know why, as it is more or less the same setup I previously had. The only difference is that it’s probably not what I hoped for.

Fedora kind of disappointed me with its Fedora 11 release. The sound is not working as expected, which is basically it. Also Wine isn’t working as it should either, which I’m not sure if it’s the Fedora teams fault or the Wine teams fault.
Basically Fedora 10 seemed more compatible with my Eee PC 1000H than what Fedora 11 is. Kind of strange, isn’t it?

I’m thinking about going to FreeBSD, but it won’t install in VirtualBox, and it only recognises the wireless on my Eee PC 701; so I can’t really test it properly.

In other words I feel like I’m in limbo at the moment. I can’t seem to find a distribution that fits my needs, and also supports my hardware.

Send suggestions to @xen_yasai.

Back in bed with Fedora.

I think I’ve managed to configure my Eee PC as I like it, again, after I reinstalled Fedora and restored my backups.

All I want is an up-to-date Linux distro that is a rolling release and works out-of-the-box on my Eee PC. I could use Fedora Rawhide, but it’s too unstable.

I’ll keep on looking and testing, but so far Fedora does the job.

No Arch Linux love from me.

I started installing Arch Linux and it seemed to go very smooth. After getting halfway through the wiki article I gave in.

Arch is probably very good, when you have a lot of time on your hands and know Linux like the back of your hand.

All I want is to install the basic core system with GNOME, and then tweak the system. I do not want to tweak an then install.

I’m giving Debian a go, but I might try Arch again if that fails. So far it seems like I might end up installing Fedora, as usual.

Hello world!

Tomorrow I’ll be busy installing Arch Linux, and hopefully that will go very smooth. I’m not so sure if I’ll have time for blogging at all tomorrow, but I’ll for sure tweet now and then.

Also, I hope you find my newly planned way of blogging seems interesting. I’ll write a more informative article on that later, describing my idea behind it and how I will try to use it.

Take care.
